ST. JOHN'S MODEL UN
A LETTER FROM THE CO-SECRETARIES GENERAL
Why SJMUNC?
Dear Delegates and Moderators,
We are very excited to welcome you to our campus for the Thirty-Ninth Annual St. John’s Model United Nations Conference, which will take place on Saturday, October 24th, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This will be a day to forge new friendships, spark new passions, and make a real, human attempt at conceiving change in the world.
Our conference is designed to offer a meaningful experience for every type of delegate.
For some, including middle schoolers that would like to join our conference, this will be their first conference. Like any new environment, Model UN may feel foreign and intimidating at first: the panel of desks, the papers of research, the western business attire. Our beginner committees provide an ideal place to start. One of our conference leaders reflects on his first SJMUNC:
“I had never spoken in a Model UN committee before my first SJMUNC conference. Even our weekly school meetings intimidated me, especially as a nervous public speaker watching experienced delegates speak so effortlessly and confidently. I sat through the first two hours of my SJMUNC committee without speaking once. But over time, I began to feel more comfortable with the people around me, and eventually found the courage to raise my placard once. After that, I spoke at every opportunity I could.”
For others, SJMUNC will provide an opportunity to challenge themselves and sharpen their skills. We offer intermediate committees and advanced crises that require quick thinking and confidence in the face of uncertainty.
For the past thirty-eight years, it has been our club’s mission to ensure that every delegate has a place at our conference. This year’s conference, our 39th SJMUNC, is no exception.

Sincerely,

St. John's Model United Nations was founded in 1972. From its humble beginnings, many dedicated student and faculty leaders have transformed it into one of our school’s most popular clubs. Throughout the years, and through rain, shine, or blizzard snow, our club has upheld its commitment to collaborating on real-world issues.
